Every June, the Burlingame, California downtown is transformed into a cycling capital for the Burlingame Criterium and Ryan’s Ride.

The Burlingame Criterium is one of the largest downtown cycling races in California. It attracts hundreds of amateur and pro riders from throughout the state who compete on the under one mile track through downtown Burlingame. The race is sponsored by the Peninsula Velo Cycling Club, one of the most successful clubs in Northern California.

In addition to the Burlingame Criterium, Ryan’s Ride is the largest children’s bike ride in the country, with over 700 participants aged 3 – 10.

Raziel Ungar, Burlingame Properties: We're here in downtown Burlingame on a beautiful summer morning for the Burlingame Criterium and Ryan's Ride. There's several thousand people here and it's incredible. We had over 700 kids riding this morning; all different ages. All the way from four years old, where they're getting pushed by their parents, up until 8 and 10-year-olds. And then we also have a bunch of pro-riders who started as early as 7:00 AM today going up till about 1:00 PM.

Travis Ma, Race Director: The Criterium started back in 1974, and in 1976 we've had races here in the downtown area. And we've got pros, women, men, and a whole bunch of amateur classes here racing today.

John Phua, Co-Founder, Ryan Phua Memorial Kids’s Ride: We're at the Ryan Phua Memorial Kids' Ride, and this is our seventh year anniversary of having this event in memory of our son, Ryan.

Michele Phua, Co-Founder, Ryan Phua Memorial Kids’s Ride: We set up a memorial fund at the Lance Armstrong Foundation to support cancer, survivorship program, and I think when I see those little kids, 680 of them that walk on the course, ride on the course with a big smile on, you know, I just think it's just a great way to represent my son.

Matthew Phua, Ryan’s Twin Brother: There's different age groups and the 4-and-under are going to ride 200 meters, from start to finish. And then the 5 to 8 year olds are going to ride one lap, and the 9 to 12 year olds are going to ride 2 laps.

Nick Love, 5th Year Ryan’s Ride Participant: I've been out here for five years and I really like riding around the tracks. The ride is a lot of fun and it's a great experience.

Travis Ma, Race Director: Ryan's Ride -- big draw, huge draw for us, and kind of completes the whole program that we have for the day.

Todd Gogulski, Cycling Commentator, Former Pro Road Racer: So you know, I do a lot of traveling; I travel all around the country and I announce races in Europe, and one of the really unique things about here is this Ryan's Ride. We had 650 kids pre-registered last night to come do this ride, and it's a memorial ride and it's about the kids and so that's really awesome. This may be the biggest kid's ride in the country; it's the biggest one I've ever seen. And you add that on top of the Burlingame Criterium, which are the races that all the other guys have, and the women as well, it really puts together a nice package here in Burlingame and I hope to be here for many years to come.

Text: Each year over 700 kids participate in Ryan’s Ride, and over 600 amateur and pro rider compete in the Criterium. Monies raised benefit the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Burlingame Community for Education Foundation.
